Peterborough City Council detains stray dogs in kennels for seven days under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. If a dog is not claimed within those seven days, it becomes the property of the kennels or rehoming centre and is assessed for rehoming. The council says it is the owner's job to report a missing dog to the service, and owners have to pay a fine to get a stray dog back.
