South Tyneside Council's Animal Welfare Officer collects reported stray dogs between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, via the Council Contact Centre. An out-of-hours collection service runs until 10pm on weekdays and at weekends, and there is no collection service outside of those hours, so you may need to keep the dog with you until it can be collected.

If the owner cannot be contacted or the dog has no accurate identification, South Tyneside Council's Animal Welfare Officer takes it to West Hall Kennels, Cleadon Lane, Whitburn. Dogs collected out of normal office hours are not scanned for a microchip first and go straight there. A dog not claimed within 7 days of entering the kennels passes into the ownership of West Hall Kennels, which offers a re-homing service.
