First steps if you lose your dog in Ponders End

  1. 1

Search outward along roads, paths and fields — a dog can cover several kilometres in the first few hours.

    Tip from locals

Search outward along the River Lea and the New River, about 0.6 and 1.2 miles away, toward Lee Valley Country Park, about 3.1 miles off, which offers a long open corridor.

  2. 2

Call the shelter, the local police and nearby vets straight away: a loose dog is usually picked up and handed in quickly.

  3. 3

Ask people not to chase or shout — a frightened dog runs. Crouch down, avoid eye contact and call calmly.

    Tip from locals

Ask walkers in Firs Farm Wetlands, about 1.9 miles away, and Gunpowder Park, roughly 2.2 miles off, to watch and call rather than chase.

  4. 4

Leave something carrying your scent, plus water, where he went missing, and check back regularly.

    Tip from locals

The A1010 runs right through the area, so keep any scent item and water on the quieter side away from it.

  5. 5

Report him to the microchip registry and start a targeted alert that reaches the whole neighbourhood at once.

    Tip from locals

Include Northumberland Park, about 2.9 miles to the south, Waltham Cross, about 2.9 miles to the north, and Buckhurst Hill, about 3.7 miles to the south-east, when spreading the word.
