First steps if you lose your cat in Louisville

  1. 1

Search the immediate area very thoroughly first — a frightened cat usually hides silently within a few houses, not far away.

    Tip from locals

Search Waterfront Park first, about 0.6 miles away, then Falls of the Ohio State Park, roughly 1.1 miles off, the nearest quiet green spots where a frightened cat may stay hidden.

  2. 2

Go out again after dark with a torch: cats move once it is quiet, and their eyes reflect the light under cars, sheds and hedges.

    Tip from locals

After dark, check the Louisville and Portland Canal, about 0.4 miles away, and the Ohio River shoreline, about 0.8 miles off, where waterside growth gives a cat cover.

  3. 3

Ask neighbours to open garages, sheds and cellars — cats slip inside unnoticed and get shut in.

    Tip from locals

Ask neighbors near I 64 and I 65, about 0.3 and 0.5 miles away, to open garages and sheds first, since those motorways usually keep a scared cat from crossing.

  4. 4

Ask neighbours to check enclosed spaces again and share a recent photo with the last-seen place and time.

    Tip from locals

Share the photo in Jeffersonville, about 2 miles to the north-east, and Parkway Village, roughly 3 miles to the south, to spread it further.

  5. 5

Report her to the shelter, nearby vets and the microchip registry, then start a targeted alert that reaches the whole neighbourhood at once.

    Tip from locals

Report it to the 3 vet practices within about 3 miles and the microchip registry before starting a targeted alert.

What does it cost to get my pet back from Louisville Metro Animal Services?

For a licensed pet, the redemption fee is $15 plus $10 per day of boarding for a first offense; for an unlicensed pet it is $30 plus $10 per day. Any veterinary treatment is added. Under Ordinance No. 290, Series 2007, an unlicensed, unaltered dog, cat or ferret must be spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and licensed before it is released to its owner.
